Kimberly Alderman’s womanifesto

I will not be a good girl.
Nor will I behave myself.
And I will not “just let it go”
unless, of course, I damn well want to.

I will never wait for a man to begin the rest of my life.

I will shoot straight from the hip,
I will take chances,
And I’ll always chase the dream
(my dream).

I will vehemently refuse to take “no” for an answer.
I will never forget those who have been good to me.
Nor will I give practicality the respect it is usually accorded.
And I will not spend my money the way they say I should.

I will engage other human beings,
I will wipe away the tears of my children,
And I will defend them viciously when strange dogs (or men) bark at them.

I will not stop listening to the sounds of the world –
(the real world, made of dirt, trees and rocks, not the one of advertisements and electrical static).
I will not forget who raised me,
even when that fierce, lunatic of a woman gets on my last nerve.

I will travel to the ends of this earth,
and maybe to the moon.
I will consult with my Mother Self whenever I feel unfastened,
And I will love from the depths of my grimy human soul.
