Chelsea’s Womanifesto: What’s Important to Me
It is important to me that I stand up for what I believe in. If I think something is wrong but do not do anything about it I am cheating myself. I do not want to be the kind of person who just sits back and lets things happen if I know they are wrong.
It is important to me to be held accountable for things. It is one thing to make decisions or be given deadlines, but if no one, including myself, holds me to them then they are meaningless.
It is important to me that you believe whatever you want to believe and respect that I have the right to do the same. I believe the greatest challenge we face is to coexist with others. The truth is, everyone has their reasons for believing what they do. Whether it be their experiences or the way they were brought up, everything we see or feel becomes a part of us and what we believe. Because no one has the exact same experiences, no one will have the exact same beliefs.
It is important to me to constantly challenge myself. Taking this class has definitely done that. Including everything we have read and everyone’s opinion in the class, I have exposed myself to a diverse collection of views. Have I agreed with everything? No, but I have come to understand everyone in the class in a way that I never would have in a different setting.
It is important to me to be defined by things other than my gender, race, or class. I want to be defined for my actions, decisions, and accomplishments. I believe those say more about me than demographic facts ever could.
It is important to me to be able to see how issues affect me. It is easy to remove myself from everything that does not have a direct impact on me, but ignoring every issue that does not affect me will not get me anywhere. Life is all about relating and finding common ground with others and this cannot happen if you do not try to figure out where others are coming from.
It is most important to me to know what I stand for because no one else is going to decide it for me.
