A Language Older Than Words
The Culture of Make-Believe by Derrick Jensen
These two books have given me courage in ways no other books have. Long live Derrick Jensen!! Long live Context Books for publishing him!!!
Shah of Shahs by Ryszard Kapuscinski
My pal Peri Heydari Pakroo turned me onto this little gem. i read it twice in a row. In light of the Bush administration’s machinations, this “fictional” recount of the revolution in Iran, as told by this Polish investigative reporter, holds an enormous amount of significance.
The Golden Compass
The Subtle Knife
The Amber Spyglass by Phillip Pullman
This trilogy is so brilliant and slyly subversive, I experience JEALOUSY towards people who haven’t read them yet. I have read them all three times.
Assata: An Autobiography by Assata Shakur
If you don’t know Assata’s story, you are lame.
Barbara Bush: A Memoir by Barbara Bush
No other book could cue you into the mindset of the bush family like this one. I got it for a dollar at the goodwill. It is decidedly difficult to read this tripe, but your mind will be sharper for the effort.
Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser
I know this book got a lot of press, but people still allow corporations to feed our children, so I figure not enough people have read it. this foray into the U.S.’s eating habits can also be applied to the corporations that clothe, educate and “entertain” us.
Scribes Rising by V.S. Chochezi and Staajabu
This is a mother/daughter poetry anthology. I saw them perform in sacramento and was positively blown away. They take the griot tradition to a whole new level of brilliance.
Cruddy by Lynda J. Barry
Read it and weep for our kids, goddess bless their hearts.
Lies My Teacher Told Me by James W. Loewen
Fuck high school teachers who lie to us. Read this book and take your/your kid’s history teachers to task.
Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination by Robin D.G. Kelley
This man is a loving genius, a veritable rarity in u.s, culture. This book has changed my life and given me hope.
